Two-Thirds of Emails Are Opened on Mobiles

Movable Ink's US Consumer Device Preference Report Two-thirds of emails in the USA are now opened on mobile devices; primarily iPhones and iPads, according to a recent report from Movable Ink.

Movable Ink’s US Consumer Device Preference Report says that 66% of emails were opened on mobile devices, 47% on smartphones and 19% on tablets. Email messages opened on desktop computers has declined to 34%, just one third.

The mobile activity is dominated by Apple iPhones and iPads, which together account for more than half of email opens. iPhones alone were used more than all desktop computers combined.

In analysing the findings, an article posted at Marketing Land reaches the obvious conclusion: “Make email and associated landing pages mobile-friendly.”

It also follows that it’s a bad idea to have Flash on your website home page or landing pages. Mobile traffic is dominated by iPhones and iPads, and they don’t display Flash animations. As the Marketing Land article author wrote: “Remarkably I still receive emails on my iPhone that click-through to pages that indicate I’m missing the Flash plug-in.”
